PSJA ISD hosts Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the PSJA Elvis Ballew Learning Center offering continuing education opportunities for parents
PHARR – The Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) celebrated the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the PSJA Elvis Ballew Learning Center on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. The center, already a valuable resource for students to earn industry certifications, has now expanded its offerings to include programs for parents of PSJA ISD students.
In collaboration with South Texas College (STC), the PSJA Elvis Ballew Learning Center now provides parents the opportunity to pursue industry certifications in high-demand fields. These certifications, recognized by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and respected industry organizations, equip parents with the skills needed to advance in their careers.
"PSJA ISD is committed to providing opportunities for everyone in our community," said PSJA ISD Superintendent Dr. Alejandro Elias. "The expansion of the Ballew Learning Center is a testament to that commitment. Our partnership with South Texas College allows PSJA ISD parents to continue their education and pursue their career aspirations, creating a lasting impact on the families we serve."
Dr. Linda Uribe, PSJA ISD Executive Officer for College Readiness, highlighted the center as an innovative space where parents and the community can actively engage, giving them a head start in their career. Offering several fields that parents can choose from based on their interest.
The vision for the PSJA Ballew Learning Center originated from district leaders’ desire to address regional needs and transform the community. By partnering with STC, the initiative aims to provide parents with industry certifications in fields that will benefit both the local economy and the families of PSJA ISD.
“Our team at South Texas College fully supports this initiative, and we are committed to doing everything we can for our community,” said STC Vice President and Provost of Academic Affairs and Economic Development Dr. Anahid Petrosian during her remarks. “Through our continuing education and credit programs, we will ensure that participants have a smooth transition into one of over 130 programs we offer, helping them achieve their educational and career goals. We are excited and proud of this wonderful initiative.”
After the remarks, the ribbon was officially cut, marking the beginning of a new chapter for PSJA ISD parents. Attendees were then given a tour of the facility, where they explored
classrooms, creative learning spaces, and technology designed to help parents as they begin their educational journey in acquiring a certification.
